FPL fixture difficulty

FPL Fixture Difficulty, Rebuilt for the Player

Most FPL fixture difficulty charts give every player on a team the same green, amber or red box. That is useful shorthand — but it ignores the way football actually creates fantasy points.

Fantasy Matchup Edge starts with a better FDR, separating fixture opportunity for defenders, midfielders and forwards. Then we go further: every player is projected individually across the next five fixtures.

Use the first table as a smarter FPL fixture ticker. Use the second when you want to know which players the next five games are really built for.

1 = easiest, 5 = hardest. The rating is position-specific and built from the model's IF-STARTS projected FPL output relative to the same players across this exact five-Gameweek run. Switch DEF, MID or FWD to reveal the underlying opportunity score and fixture lift.

How the model works

But even that is still too crude

One fixture can contain several completely different fantasy matchups.

Position-aware difficulty is a better starting point. It still cannot tell you whether the specific actions that make this player valuable are likely to appear in this match.

01

A red fixture can hide a green player

The opponent is strong. The matchup can still suit the attacker.

A winger may face a traditionally difficult opponent but attack the exact channel that side tends to leave exposed, or a forward may retain a strong goalscoring route in a game the basic FDR marks red. The team-level rating sees the opponent. The player projection sees the opportunity.

02

A green fixture can flatter a defender

An easy opponent does not guarantee a strong fantasy route.

A defender can have an attractive clean-sheet environment yet project poorly elsewhere: limited attacking involvement, fewer defensive contributions, or a matchup that does not feed the actions they normally score from. Green does not automatically mean high expected points.

03

Same shirt. Same opponent. Different answer.

Two teammates can have very different Next 5 runs.

A striker, central midfielder and full-back all inherit the same conventional fixture colour. They do not inherit the same role, action profile, scoring routes or opponent matchup. That is why our deeper layer moves from team difficulty to player projections.

Layer 2 · The player-level answer

Next 5 player projections

Instead of asking which team has the easiest run, compare the individual players projected to score best across all five matches.

Current Gameweek predicted points

From FDR to actual opportunity

Why normal FPL fixture difficulty misses so much.

A conventional FPL FDR answers a useful but limited question: how difficult is this opponent for the team? It cannot fully answer the question fantasy managers actually care about: what does this matchup mean for this player?

Our position-specific FDR starts from the existing FME player projections. For each team and position we compare a fixed cohort's projected points in that fixture with those same players' own average across this exact five-Gameweek horizon. That controls for player quality and asks a more useful question: is this fixture lifting or suppressing the normal opportunity for this position?

The opportunity scores are then converted into the familiar 1-to-5 FDR scale, separately for DEF, MID and FWD. That makes the ticker easy to scan without pretending every player on a team has the same matchup.

The important shift

Traditional fixture difficulty ranks the opponent. FME tries to rank the opportunity. The first table improves the familiar fixture ticker. The second asks the more useful question: which players are actually projected to benefit from the next five games?

Use the two layers for different decisions.

The position-specific table is useful when you want a fast Premier League fixture difficulty overview: which teams have attractive defensive runs, where midfield matchups soften, and where forwards face tougher schedules.

The Next 5 player projections are for decisions that need more precision — transfers, medium-term holds, comparing similarly priced players, or spotting someone whose individual matchup run is better than the fixture colours suggest. For the current week alone, our FPL predicted points and player projections provide the more detailed single-Gameweek view.

A fixture ticker should be the beginning, not the end.

If all you need is the schedule, our FPL fixtures page keeps that simple. If you want to understand why the model can rate two teammates differently, read How Our Model Works. Or explore the rest of our FPL tools for projections, clean-sheet odds, DEFCON and deeper player data.
